Digging a Ten Gallon Hole in Texas
Back in Alabama, digging a ten gallon hole to plant a crepe myrtle tree is easy. But here in Fort Worth, renting a jack hammer might not be a bad idea if you have the means to do so. Unfortunately, we had no such means. But thankfully we discussed our tree planting plans beforehand, so when he and mom came for a visit this weekend they came prepared as always: dad brought his pick axe. The soil here is so thick and goupy (I think that’s the first time I have ever written the word “goupy”) that it sticks to shovel, your shoe, your hands, and even your ears (Don’t ask). After much sweat, we finally finished the task. Let’s hope both of the trees we planted grow up to be big and strong. It was great to have the help and of mom and dad this weekend. (or as they are beginning to be called more commonly, thanks to Dillon: Grandy and Pappy).
