Last Weekend of the Summer
After work on Friday, Caleb and I played in his sandbox, chased each other with the water hose, and had a picnic on the back patio, with Tiffany’s famous chicken salad.
Saturday morning’s activities began with a father-son bike ride to the park after breakfast. Later on, we went to the zoo for a few hours, and Tiffany met us for a picnic lunch at the zoo. It was probably a no-no, but we fed the squirrels some peanuts. They were literally eating out of our hands. They thought they had hit the mother load. While Caleb napped, James Bradley’s The Flags of our Fathers allowed me to live vicariously through the infamously bloody battle of Iwo Jima, which was a turning point in WWII. I’m sure I’ll have another journal entry coming soon about this mind-blowing book. When Caleb woke, I took him to the pool for a little swim.
Caleb woke up Sunday morning with some hideous green stuff dripping from his nose, which meant that we couldn’t take him to church. I guess that was his lucky break because I took him to the park instead to run, slide, seesaw, and feed the ducks. We got home around noon. Tiffany’s best friend Sarah came over and had lunch with us spent the night. I worked a little during Caleb’s nap, and when he returned, Tiffany and I went to see “The Constant Gardener”:http://www.google.com/reviews?cid=bb7a6c71377ea440&client=showtimes&fq=the+constant+gardener while Sarah took Caleb to ride the mini-train down along the Trinity River.
After breakfast this morning, Labor Day, I mowed and edged the yard. With our teeny yard, that takes every bit of 35 minutes. Afterwards we (with Sarah with us) arrived at NRH~2~O right when it opened. We never planned to spend six hours there. This was the first time that I can remember that we let Caleb skip his nap. He was full throttle all day long. Even on the 30-minute drive home he recounted every event of going down the water slides and playing in the water.
I’d say this is somewhat typical of our weekend days, perhaps a little more activity-oriented than normal, but our weekends usually include a lot of family time, and we love it that way. Now we’re all looking forward to a little cooler weather …which should arrive, in another month or two.
